Fiddlin Willie Band

Live Music with Fiddlin’ Willie!

The Fiddlin’ Willie Band hails from across the road. Fronted by the prodigious musical wizardry of our 14-year old neighbor Willie Marschner, and backed up by his Dad, the band has played Muse Winery’s St. Patrick’s Day show since 2016. Although the band plays music ranging from Abba to Zydeco, St. Patrick’s is a day the band gets jiggy with traditional Irish reels, hornpipes, sean nos airs, and ballads. So you want to go to a real party? Come to Muse on March 19 – and bring your dancing shoes.

Ron has been playing keyboards since he was 5 years old, at first studying classical music. He switched to popular music in his teens and formed his first rock band when he was 14, performing at teen dances in and around his hometown, Niles, Michigan. He also started writing songs for the band a few years later.

In 1967, the band recorded his song “This Is the Time,” and it was picked up by major radio stations. The song became a #1 hit in May 1967. His band, The Sixth Generation, began being booked at major venues across the Upper Midwest, and also opened for major well-known bands of the time, such as The Buckinghams, Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels, The Boxtops, and others.

During college, traveling to venues became a problem and the band stopped playing in 1970.

After college, Ron started a career in the information technology industry that bought him to Virginia in 1984 and culminated with many years as a very successful senior executive and CEO of international companies. During these years, Ron did not do musical performances, but he did continue playing music privately.

After retiring from the business world, Ron again started performing at music venues in 2011, first with the reformed Sixth Generation for a few years, and since then as a Singer/Songwriter. He plays regularly at selected venues, and audiences are always extremely appreciative of his music. Ron is grateful that his music brings joy to the people in his audience. His aim is to touch the lives of people who listen to his music in a positive way.

Ron also returned to writing, recording, and publishing songs in 2011, with several making it to the Top 10 on Billboard’s Hit Singles chart. One of them, his song “Livin’ In a Small Town” made it to #2 on Billboard in 2015, only behind The Rolling Stones’ 50-year anniversary re-release of “Satisfaction.” Another hit, “Touch the Moon,” was considered for a Grammy nomination in 2017. In addition, there are numerous articles in various music industry publications praising Ron’s music.

Deck the Walls

We have works by several local artists on display this month! Each has their own unique style and their works are a treat to the eyes. We have works by Ellen Fairchild-Flugel, Barbara Camph, Helen Jean-Smith, Bahir Al Badry, August Hoerr, Lodema Miller, and Bryan Baker to name a few!

ELLEN FAIRCHILD-FLUGEL. Ellen’s metalworking experience began at age 16, when she designed her first ring from the red wax coating on Gouda cheese and cast it in silver. Her journey in metal has evolved over the years to include forging iron, larger-scale casting, etching, forming metal over stakes and anvils, welding, soldering, construction, and more.

Creating relationships and contrast between natural elements is a recurring theme in her work. When designing she incorporates unusual textures and materials with metals to complement the beauty of each; copper and art glass, bronze and marble, handmade paper with gold, silver, and gems. All of her pieces are one of a kind.

She is a member of OASIS Fine Art & Craft.

Bahir Al Badry Art

BAHIR AL BADRY. Bahir is an Iraqi artist, currently living in Harrisonburg, Va. He started his career as an artist in 1979 while working as a marine engineer. His overseas travels have been an inspiration for his art and he has explored themes of justice, freedom, and existence. In his work, he utilizes elements of totem art and focuses on humanity, peace, love, and freedom – elements of life that he feels he was deprived of in Iraq. He also focuses on current issues, such as climate change.

Through art, he expresses a need to resolve the issues of mankind, while also exploring the cultural aspects of his birthplace and of ancient Mesopotamia, a culture which he believes is heavily engraved in his identity.

Bahir recently opened his studio, upstairs at OASIS.

HELEN JEAN SMITH is a nationally recognized artist, known for her village-style portraits. She was born in Canada and educated at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario. After marrying a United States Marine Corps Officer, she became a United States citizen, and now lives in Shenandoah County, Virginia.

Most of her paintings are done on a commission basis and she has painted her whimsical town views from her home village of Lantz Mill, Virginia, to Essex, Connecticut; from Annapolis, Maryland to Victoria, British Columbia; throughout Virginia and beyond.

BARBARA CAMPH. US-born Barbara Camph has been a full-time stained glass artist for more than 20 years, running her own business in southern Portugal, Panama, and now the U.S.

Her work ranges from large window installations, lamps, and mirrors, to smaller gift items.

Barbara teaches extensively, either at her home studio or at other locations. Known as “the glass lady” she can produce virtually anything in glass.

Barbara became the foremost stained glass producer and designer in Algarve, Portugal, supplying a wide range of commission pieces and gift items through a variety of outlets.  Barbara is particularly proud of being one of the initiators and founding members of ArtXelb, an artists’ cooperative which is based in Silves, Portugal.
